The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has says that, there were some states in the country that recorded over 50 percent illegal registration in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).
Kano state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. R. A. Shehu made thin known to journalists at a press briefing in Kano.
He stated that, the Commission has observed that, many people who show up for the registration already has their permanent voters card (PVCS).
Noting that, “as at January, 2022 about 40 percents of those who registered in Kano state were found to have registered before. The scenario is in all states of the Federation. In fact, there were some states that recorded over 50% illegal registration”. He emphasized.
Professor Shehu said, the Commission has been trying its best to educate people to understand that, the PVCs issued by the Commission do not expire. Therefore, there is no need for anybody who has registered before to register again.
Warning that, double registration is an offence punishable by Electoral Act. 2022.
The Commissioner added that, considering the challenges of space in the rural areas coupled with the harsh weather condition, it has open an additional registration centre at Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium because there is enough space and seats.
He said, currently there are over 380,000 old PCVs and 77,117 new PVCs uncollected in the state; therefore he called on those who registered to go to their respective centers to collect them on time.
Prof. Shehu said the Commission will continue to appreciate those who are encouraging people to come forward to register and warned politician not to take advantage of that for campaign and rallies.
