The Nigerian Government has taken a firm stance against kidney trafficking, promising stringent penalties for offenders involved in this heinous act. The Federal Ministry of Health, represented by Director Patricia Deworitshe, issued a press statement in response to an investigative report by Daily Trust. This report shed light on the trafficking of human organs, specifically kidneys, within parts of the country’s capital, Abuja.
The investigation exposed the involvement of private hospitals in clandestine operations, where minors underwent surgical kidney removal in exchange for significant sums, notably N1 million. Outraged by these revelations, numerous Nigerians expressed concern and demanded swift government intervention to apprehend those perpetrating this illegal trade.
The Ministry, in its statement, expressed solidarity with the victims and condemned the act unequivocally. Citing the National Health Act (NHA) of 2014, the Ministry highlighted Sections 51-56, which explicitly prohibit such practices. Offenders, whether buyers, sellers, medical practitioners, or facilities facilitating this illegal trade, face severe legal consequences, including a fine of N1,000,000 or imprisonment for a minimum of two years, or both.
Moreover, the Ministry emphasized that kidney donation should strictly occur with informed consent from donors and under proper medical guidance, ensuring the confidentiality of the process to save lives. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) is actively investigating allegations involving medical practitioners engaged in these illicit activities.
While emphasizing their dedication to enhancing regulatory standards and practices within the healthcare system, the Federal Ministry of Health cautioned the public against engaging in any illegal practices, reinforcing the importance of ethical medical procedures.
The Ministry also urged individuals with relevant information leading to the arrest of perpetrators to contact them at 08033228978, emphasizing the collective responsibility to curb and bring to justice those involved in this reprehensible trade.
The government’s resolute stance against kidney trafficking underscores its commitment to preserving ethical healthcare practices and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation
