The senate committee on Judiciary human right has reiterated commitments to advancing the public interest through diligent, objective, and purposeful legislative engagement.
The chairman of the committee senator Ayodele Adeniyi gave this assurance during the screening exercise of presidential nominees for appointment as chaiman and members of governing council of the National humanright commission
He said exercise is critical on the promotion and protection of human rights in our country It therefore important to approach it with the seriousness, diligence and impartiality it disarves
He further said the committee deem it important to discharge this legislative responsibility very well
to scrutinize the qualifications, experience, competence, integrity, and suitability of the nominees, and thereafter, make appropriate recommendations to the Senate.
The chairman also explained that the commission has an important role in strengthening constitutional democracy, promoting access
to justice, and ensuring respect for fundamental human rights.
“Its mandate includes investigating complaints of human rights violations, conducting public inquiries into such violations, and making appropriate decisions and recommendations
thereof.”
Senator Ayidele also said the Commission is expected to provide an accessible institutional platform for the protection and promotion of human rights, particularly for citizens who will be otherwise.
However all the nominees have attended the exercise and no petition against their nomination and succefully responded well especially Dr. Salamatu Huseni Suleiman, who have been Minister of women Affairs and state Minister of Foreign affairs as well as her second term nomination to chair the commission
All members of the committee were satisfied with their experiences and record of service in different field and how president Bola Ahmad Tinubu make a balanced nomination which include personalities from law journalism profession and other fields.
Notable among them are journalists Ayo Adewuyi of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and Maupe Ogun of Channels Television, as well as Suwaida Muhammad Ibrahim from Kano as private legal practitioner.
