Ahead of 2027 General Elections, in an effort to equip its members with the knowledge and skills required for ethical, accurate and safe election reporting ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano Online Media Chapel (KOMC), in partnership with the Aminu Magashi Garba (AMG) Foundation, has organised a one-day capacity-building workshop.
The workshop, held on Wednesday at the NUJ Secretariat, Farm Centre, Kano, brought together online journalists from different media organisations to strengthen their understanding of election reporting, fact-checking, media ethics and personal safety during electoral assignments.
Speaking at the event, veteran journalist and Editor-in-Chief of Solacebase, Comrade Abdullateef Abubakar Jos, urged journalists to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, integrity, honesty and accountability, while remaining vigilant throughout the election period.
According to him, journalists covering elections often face threats from political thugs and, in some cases, security personnel, stressing that media practitioners must apply the safety strategies and professional skills acquired through such training to protect them while effectively carrying out their constitutional role.
Delivering a paper titled “Ethics, Fact-Checking and Election Reporting,” former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, emphasised the need for accuracy, fairness and impartiality in election reporting. He cautioned journalists against the spread of misinformation and urged them to uphold the highest standards of journalism.
Another resource person, Isyaku Ahmad, also stressed the importance of adhering to professional ethics while covering elections. He shared practical approaches to addressing challenges that journalists may encounter before, during and after the electoral process.
In his welcome address, Chairman of the NUJ Kano Online Media Chapel, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, expressed confidence that the workshop would strengthen the capacity of participants to deliver responsible, credible and conflict-sensitive coverage of the 2027 general elections.
The participants received intensive training on journalism ethics, fact-checking, election reporting and personal safety measures while covering election-related activities and conflict situations.
The workshop formed part of ongoing efforts by the Kano Online Media Chapel and the Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation to promote ethical journalism, combat misinformation and enhance the safety and professionalism of media practitioners in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections
